The short answer: to host 1,000 guests you need a single hall that seats that many at round tables, a caterer experienced at that scale with a proper kitchen, parking for several hundred cars, enough time for set-up and pack-down, and a team on the day. The Maher Centre in Leicester (15 Ravensbridge Drive, LE4 0BZ) seats 1,000 for a banquet in one pillarless 1,100m² hall, has a 350+ space private floodlit car park, and every booking covers a full 12 hours including supplier set-up and pack-down.
We have been running events here since 1996. This guide is what we would tell any family planning at the very top end.
Can any venue really hold 1,000 wedding guests?
Many venues quote large numbers, but check the layout behind them. A thousand people standing or sat in theatre rows needs far less space than a thousand guests at round tables with a stage, a buffet and a dance floor. Ask every venue three questions:
- How many can you seat at round tables, with a stage?
- How many if we add a dance floor?
- Is everyone in one room, with no pillars?
At the Maher Centre: 1,000 at a seated banquet; 800 for a reception with a dance floor; 1,500 standing or theatre-style. If you need both 1,000 seats and a large dance floor, plan the dancing for a separate function such as the mehndi or sangeet, or talk to the team about the layout. See capacity and layouts.
The big decisions to make first
Is it really 1,000?
Draft the guest list for each side and each function before you book anything. Many families find the main event reaches four figures while the mehndi or sangeet is smaller. Knowing which function is the big one shapes the whole plan.
Which functions need the big hall?
For a Hindu, Sikh or Muslim wedding, the reception or walima is often the largest. Smaller events can be held at home, at a place of worship, or in a smaller space.
Which date?
Very large halls are in demand for big weddings, and popular Saturdays and festival dates book up early. Have two or three date options ready when you enquire.

Catering for 1,000 guests
Feeding a full hall is the hardest operational part of the day. Ask your caterer:
- Have you catered for this many guests at once? When and where?
- How many chefs and serving staff will you bring?
- Buffet or served? How many buffet lines, and how long will service take?
- What equipment will you bring, and what do you need from the venue?
- How will you handle vegetarian, halal, Jain and allergy requirements at this scale?
The Maher Centre does not provide catering, so you choose the right caterer for your numbers, from our partner network of teams who know the venue inside out, or your own. Your caterer gets an industrial kitchen with four burners, a free gas supply and refrigeration. Beef and pork are not served on the grounds. For large buffets, several service points spread around the hall keep queues short.
Parking and arrivals
A thousand guests could mean several hundred cars arriving in a short window. Plan for it:
- Confirm the on-site parking total in writing. The Maher Centre has 350+ spaces in a privately-owned floodlit car park.
- Encourage car-sharing, and consider coaches for relatives travelling from other cities.
- Stagger arrival times: close family, then elders, then everyone else.
- Use the attendants. Three car park and WC attendants are on duty as part of your Maher Centre hire.
Our wedding parking guide explains how to estimate the spaces you need.
Seeing and hearing the couple
At this scale, the back rows are a long way from the stage. Good sightlines and sound make every guest feel included:
- A pillarless hall means no guest is sat behind a pillar.
- A full PA system carries speeches and ceremony to every table.
- Optional LED side screens or a large 7m-wide LED screen show close-ups of the couple.
- A raised stage, or optional tiered front steps, lifts the couple above the crowd.
Comfort for a full hall
A thousand people generate a lot of heat. The Maher Centre is air-conditioned throughout and single-storey, so elderly relatives are not dealing with stairs. Two private en-suite dressing rooms give the couple and close family somewhere quiet between rituals and outfit changes.
Timings: how a 1,000-guest day fits into 12 hours
Set-up for a hall this size takes time: hundreds of chairs to dress, a stage to dress, buffet lines to lay. Every Maher Centre booking includes supplier set-up and pack-down within the 12 hours, typically about two hours each side, leaving up to around eight hours of event time. Nothing ever feels rushed.
Example evening reception
- Early afternoon: décor, stage and caterer set up; banqueting furniture laid out.
- Doors open: attendants guide cars; ushers seat guests by table plan.
- Couple's entrance with lighting, music and perhaps cold sparklers.
- Dinner service from several buffet points or served by table.
- Speeches, cake and stage photographs, organised by table so queues stay short.
- Dancing where the layout allows, then farewells.
- Close, then supplier pack-down. Full venue clean-up is included.
People: the team you need on the day
- Venue team: at the Maher Centre, an event manager and caretaker on duty, plus three car park and WC attendants.
- Ushers: family members or a hired team to seat guests and manage the stage queue.
- A single family point of contact who can make decisions so the couple do not have to.
- Supplier leads: caterer, décor, DJ, photographer: each with a copy of the running order.
A month-by-month timeline
- 12 to 18 months: agree guest numbers and functions; view venues; secure your date.
- 9 to 12 months: book caterer, décor and photographer. Ask our team for partner recommendations.
- 6 to 9 months: choose a banqueting package (Essential, Classic or Signature) and any upgrades: chandelier, LED dance floor, screens.
- 3 to 6 months: send invitations with directions and parking information; plan coaches.
- 1 to 3 months: table plan, running order, final menu.
- Final fortnight: final numbers to caterer, running order to every supplier, briefing for ushers.
