Getting it right

Gurdwara in the morning, Maher Centre for the celebration.

A Sikh wedding has a clear rhythm. The milni and the Anand Karaj take place at the gurdwara, where the couple complete the four laavan around Guru Granth Sahib Ji and guests share langar. That sacred part of the day belongs at the gurdwara, and we would never suggest otherwise.

What follows is the celebration, and that is where Maher Centre comes in. Families head from the gurdwara to our hall in north Leicester for the reception: the grand entrance, the food, the speeches, the bhangra and, at the end of the night, the doli.

Because your booking runs for a full 12 hours, suppliers can be dressing the hall while you are at the gurdwara. By the time the bride and groom arrive, the stage is lit, the tables are laid and the DJ is ready. Nothing ever feels rushed.

Food and drink

Menus, meat and the bar at a Sikh reception.

Maher Centre does not do catering. You choose the caterer, whether that is the Punjabi caterer your family has used for years or one recommended from our partner network. They work from our industrial kitchen with four burners, free gas supply and refrigeration.

Some families keep the reception vegetarian, in keeping with the langar served at the gurdwara earlier. Others serve chicken or lamb. Beef and pork are not served on the grounds of the Maher Centre.

The bar is entirely optional. Some Sikh families choose an alcohol-free reception and others want a bar. If you do, corkage and bar hire comes in three tiers: bar facilities, bar staff, or bar staff plus glassware. We can supply the drinks or refer you to a specialist bar company.

Whatever you decide, our team will respect it and brief suppliers accordingly.

Can the decorators set up while we are at the gurdwara?
Yes. Your booking covers a full 12 hours including supplier set-up and pack-down. Decorators, caterers and the DJ usually arrive at the start of the booking and have the hall ready before the family and guests arrive from the gurdwara.

Up to 1,000 seated banquet-style, or around 800 with a dance floor, which suits most Sikh receptions. For standing events the hall holds up to 1,500.
Can we serve meat at a Sikh wedding reception?
Your caterer sets the menu. Some families choose a fully vegetarian reception and others serve chicken or lamb. Beef and pork are not served on the grounds of the Maher Centre.
Do we have to have a bar?
No. The bar is optional. Some Sikh families keep the reception alcohol-free, others want a bar. Our corkage and bar hire comes in three tiers if you need it, or we can refer you to a specialist bar company.
Can we hold the jago at Maher Centre the night before?
Yes. Many families book the jago or mehndi on the evening before the Anand Karaj and the reception the following day. See our jago venue page for how the night works indoors.
How much does a Sikh wedding reception at Maher Centre cost?
We quote each booking individually. The date, guest count, number of functions and any packages or upgrades all affect the total. Ask for a free written quote, backed by our price-match promise on packages and extras.
