Kalyanam at Maher Centre

A Tamil wedding needs a hall that works to the clock.

For many Tamil families, the most important number on the wedding day is the muhurtham: the auspicious time, chosen by the family priest or astrologer, when the thaali is tied. Often it falls in the morning. Everything else, from the decorator’s set-up to the guests’ arrival, works back from that moment.

Maher Centre plans your booking around it. Each booking covers a full 12 hours, including supplier set-up and pack-down, so the manavarai can be built, the kolam drawn and the seating arranged before the priest begins. Tell us the time when you enquire and we will make it work.

The main hall is pillarless, so the manavarai at the front is visible from every seat. When the thaali is tied and the akshathai rice is showered, everyone in the room sees it.

The ceremony

How each part of a Tamil wedding works in our hall.

Customs differ between Sri Lankan and Indian Tamil families, and between communities. Your priest leads; we make the space work.

The manavarai

Your decorator builds the manavarai on stage at the head of the hall. Optional tiered front steps and a crystal chandelier add grandeur.

Nadaswaram and thavil

Live musicians play throughout the ceremony. The full PA system carries the music and the mantras to the back row.

Kanyadhanam and thaali

The father gives his daughter’s hand, and the groom ties the thaali at the muhurtham. A clear sightline from every seat.

Saptapadi and Arundhathi

The seven steps and the traditional rituals that follow, with space on stage for close family to gather.

Oonjal

If your family holds the swing ceremony, your decorator can set up the oonjal at the front of the hall.

Changing for the reception

Two private en-suite dressing rooms for the couple to change from silk sarees and veshti into reception outfits.

Food

Banana leaf sappadu and your caterer.

Maher Centre does not do in-house catering. Your family chooses a caterer who knows Tamil cooking, from sambar and rasam to payasam, and they serve it from our industrial kitchen with four burners, free gas supply and refrigeration.

If you do not have a caterer yet, we can recommend one from our partner network after meeting you. Third-party caterers are also welcome through our Partner Programme. Beef and pork are not served on the grounds of the Maher Centre.

Many Tamil Hindu weddings are alcohol-free. If you want a bar for an evening reception, bar hire is optional and comes in three tiers.
