The short answer: when your guest list runs into the hundreds, you need one room that seats everyone and a car park that fits their cars. The Maher Centre at 15 Ravensbridge Drive, Leicester LE4 0BZ, is Leicester's largest events venue: a single-storey, pillarless 1,100m² hall that seats 1,000 for a banquet, 800 for a reception with a dance floor, and 1,500 standing or theatre-style, with a 350+ space privately-owned floodlit car park. It has been run by a registered charity since 1996.

This guide does not rank other venues: capacities and facilities change, and you should always check them directly. Instead, it gives you the questions that separate a hall that can hold your numbers from one that will make your day easy.

Why is headline capacity not the full story?

A capacity figure on a website is usually the maximum for one layout, often standing or theatre-style rows. A wedding needs much more floor space per guest: round tables, a stage, perhaps a mandap, a buffet or service line, a dance floor, photographer space and clear walkways. So always ask: how many guests, seated at round tables, with our stage and dance floor in place?

For example, at the Maher Centre the same hall holds 1,500 theatre-style but 1,000 for a seated banquet, and 800 once a dance floor goes in. Any honest venue should be able to give you numbers like these for each layout. See our capacity and layouts page for the full breakdown.

What should you look for in a large wedding venue?

One room, no pillars

At a big wedding, the worst seats in the house matter. Pillars block the view of the stage and the ceremony; split rooms or marquee annexes leave part of the family watching on a screen. A pillarless hall means no guest is sat behind a pillar, and the photographer can capture the whole room.

Parking that matches the guest list

Large weddings bring a lot of cars, often arriving within the same short window. Ask how many spaces there are, whether the car park is private or shared, whether it is lit after dark, and who manages it on the day. Read our wedding venue parking guide for how to estimate what you need.

A kitchen that can feed everyone at once

Serving hundreds of hot meals at the same time is a serious operation. Your caterer needs real cooking capacity, refrigeration and space to plate up. Ask to see the kitchen with your caterer, and ask what fuel and equipment are provided.

Enough time

The bigger the event, the longer set-up and pack-down take. Stages, mandaps, hundreds of chair covers and centrepieces all take hours. Check whether supplier time is included in the booking or charged separately.

Climate and comfort

A full hall gets warm fast. Air-conditioning is not a luxury for a large wedding; it is what keeps elderly relatives comfortable through a long day.

Staff on the day

With hundreds of guests, someone needs to be managing the car park, the toilets and the running order. Ask who will be on duty, and what they do.

Easy to reach

Large Asian weddings in particular draw guests from across the country. Quick motorway access and simple directions reduce late arrivals.

The large venue checklist: questions to ask

  1. How many guests can be seated at round tables with a stage? With a dance floor?
  2. Is it one room? Are there any pillars?
  3. How many parking spaces are there, and is the car park private?
  4. What kitchen equipment does my caterer get?
  5. Can I choose my own caterer and décor suppliers?
  6. How long is the booking, and does it include set-up and pack-down?
  7. What time must the event finish? Can it run later?
  8. Is the hall air-conditioned?
  9. How many staff are on duty, and what is included?
  10. Are there private dressing rooms for the couple?
  11. Is clean-up included?
  12. Can I see a floor plan from a wedding of a similar size?

Catering at a large venue

The Maher Centre does not provide catering. That gives you the freedom to choose the right caterer for your numbers and your traditions: pick from our partner network of caterers who know the venue inside out, or bring your own. Beef and pork are not served on the grounds of the Maher Centre. When you are feeding hundreds of guests, ask your caterer how many chefs and serving staff they will bring, how long service will take, and whether they have catered at this scale before. Our external caterers guide has a full list of questions.

Making a big hall feel like your wedding

A large room can look sparse if the décor is planned for a smaller one. A few things make a big difference:

How far ahead should you book a large venue?

Big halls are in demand for big weddings, so the best dates go first. Popular Saturdays and festival dates book up early. Start viewing as soon as you have a shortlist of dates; Maher Centre tours are by appointment and take about 30 minutes. When you find the right date, secure it.
