The short answer: a Muslim wedding in Leicester usually involves two or three functions, often a mehndi or dholki, the nikah, and a walima hosted by the groom's family. The Maher Centre at 15 Ravensbridge Drive, Leicester LE4 0BZ, hosts all of them in one pillarless hall for up to 1,000 seated guests, with a private car park of 350+ spaces, a full 12-hour booking for each event, and a strict policy that beef and pork are not served on the grounds. Alcohol-free events are completely normal here. Your caterer comes from our partner network or from your own trusted contacts.

Families come to us from across Leicester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Coventry and beyond. This guide brings together what they tell us they wish they had known at the start.

What are the main functions of a Muslim wedding?

Customs vary by family and heritage: a Gujarati Muslim wedding, a Pakistani wedding, a Bangladeshi wedding and a Somali aroos all look different. Most, though, are built around these events:

The nikah

The nikah is the Islamic marriage contract. It involves the offer and acceptance (ijab and qabul), the agreement of the mahr (the gift from groom to bride), and witnesses. An imam or other knowledgeable person usually officiates. Some families hold the nikah at a mosque or at home; others hold it at the venue, either as its own event or as the opening part of a larger celebration.

The mehndi or dholki

Popular in South Asian families, the mehndi is the night of henna, music and dancing, usually hosted by the bride's family (and sometimes a separate one by the groom's). It is often the most relaxed and colourful event. See our mehndi venue page for layout ideas.

The walima

The walima is the wedding feast, traditionally hosted by the groom's family after the marriage. In many families it is the largest event of all, so guest numbers, parking and catering capacity matter most here. More on our walima venue page.

The rukhsati

In many South Asian families the rukhsati, the bride's emotional farewell from her family, closes the main wedding event. It is worth planning where it will happen and leaving time for it in the running order.

Is a nikah legally recognised in England?

This is the question families most often get caught out by. Under the current law in England and Wales, a nikah on its own is generally not recognised as a legal civil marriage unless it meets the formal requirements of marriage law (including notice, a registered building and an authorised person). Many couples therefore also hold a short civil ceremony at the register office, before or after the nikah.

Our advice: speak to Leicester Register Office (or the office for the area where you live) early, give notice in good time, and ask your imam how they handle registration. Rules can change, so always check the current position with the register office rather than relying on what a relative did a few years ago.

A planning timeline that works

  1. 12 to 18 months before: agree the functions, rough guest numbers for each side, and which family is hosting which event. Shortlist venues and book tours. Popular Saturdays and festival dates book up early.
  2. 9 to 12 months before: secure your venue date. Book the imam and confirm how the nikah will be registered.
  3. 6 to 9 months before: choose caterers and agree a halal standard in writing. Book décor, stage, photography and any DJ or nasheed artist. Our partner network can recommend teams who know the venue.
  4. 3 to 6 months before: outfits, invitations, and the floor plan, including separate seating if you want it, and where guests can pray.
  5. 1 to 3 months before: give notice at the register office if you have not already, finalise numbers, and send guests parking and arrival details.
  6. Final fortnight: share the running order with every supplier, confirm arrival times within your 12-hour booking, and brief the ushers.

What should a Muslim family ask a wedding venue?

  1. Is non-halal meat ever served on the premises?
  2. Can we choose our own halal caterer?
  3. Is there any minimum bar spend, or can the event be fully alcohol-free?
  4. Can the hall be laid out with separate seating areas for men and women?
  5. Where can guests pray during the event?
  6. Is there a private room for the bride to get ready and to rest between functions?
  7. How many guests can be seated with a stage and a buffet or service area in place?
  8. How much parking is there, and is it private?
  9. How long is the booking, and does it include set-up and clearing time?
  10. Can we book the mehndi, nikah and walima on back-to-back dates?

How the Maher Centre fits a Muslim wedding

Separate seating, modesty and prayer

Families take different approaches, and every one of them is welcome. Some seat men and women on opposite sides of a central aisle; some run entirely separate events; some mix freely. In a pillarless hall the stage can face both sides equally, and your décor partner can add screens or drapes if you would like a more defined division.

For prayer, look at the prayer times for your date when you write the running order. A walima starting in the afternoon may span Asr, Maghrib and Isha in winter. Build in short pauses, and agree with your event manager where guests can pray so ushers can point people the right way.

Food, drink and the walima menu

Walima menus in Leicester range from classic biryani, karahi and naan to live grills, dessert tables and chai stations. Whatever you choose, confirm three things with your caterer: their meat supplier and certification, how many serving staff they will bring for your numbers, and how they will handle vegetarian guests and allergies. Beef and pork are not served on the grounds, which many families find reassuring, but certification is still your caterer's responsibility. Our halal wedding venue guide covers this in detail.

How does the day flow inside a 12-hour booking?

Here is a typical walima at the Maher Centre, as an example only:

Because set-up and pack-down sit inside the booking, there is typically up to around eight hours of event time. Nothing ever feels rushed.

Frequently asked questions

Can we hold the nikah and the walima at the Maher Centre?
Yes. You can hold the nikah, mehndi and walima at the Maher Centre, either as separate bookings or with the nikah opening a larger celebration. Each booking covers a full 12 hours including supplier set-up and pack-down.
Is a nikah alone a legal marriage in England?
Under the current law in England and Wales, a nikah on its own is generally not recognised as a legal civil marriage unless it meets formal marriage-law requirements. Many couples also hold a civil ceremony at the register office. Check the current position with your local register office.
Do you serve halal food?
The Maher Centre does not provide catering. You choose a halal caterer from our partner network or bring your own, and beef and pork are not served on the grounds of the Maher Centre.
Can we have an alcohol-free wedding?
Yes. The bar is optional and alcohol-free events are completely normal at the Maher Centre.
Is there somewhere private for the bride?
Yes. There are two private en-suite dressing rooms, useful for getting ready, resting between functions and quick outfit changes.
How many guests can attend a walima at the Maher Centre?
Up to 1,000 guests seated for a banquet, or 800 with a dance floor, in one pillarless hall. The private floodlit car park has 350+ spaces.
How far in advance should we book?
Most families start looking 12 to 18 months ahead. Popular Saturdays and festival dates book up early, so arrange a tour as soon as you have a shortlist of dates.
